The 1st Pacific Educational Conference began in 1984 as grassroots partnership of educators in Micronesia with a few dozen in attendance. Pacific Resources for Education and Learning (PREL) began sponsoring the event in 1987 and expanded it to include American Samoa and Hawaii. In its early days, satellite phones were used to connect islands who were unable to travel.
PEC rotates hosts every two years between American Samoa, Federated States of Micronesia, Guam, Hawaii, the Marshall Islands, the Northern Marianas, and Palau. It has become the largest educational conference in the Pacific and regularly draws between 1000-2000 educators from around the world.
